a edge length · V volume · SA closed surface area
Six equal square faces. Every edge has length a > 0; no wall thickness.
Surface area is 6a², not 6a³. Volume and surface area have different units.
Diagrams are schematic, not to scale.
A cube is the rectangular prism case L = W = h = a. One edge determines the whole solid.
Each of its six faces has area a². Its volume measures how many unit cubes fit inside and therefore uses a³.
Use the same length unit throughout a formula. Convert mixed measurements first. Length and perimeter use units such as cm; area uses cm²; volume uses cm³. Decimal examples below are rounded to at most six significant figures, with ≈ marking an approximation.
Worked example: A cube with edge 0.5 m
V = 0.5³ = 0.125 m³.
SA = 6 × 0.5² = 1.5 m².
The same edge is 50 cm: V = 125000 cm³ and SA = 15000 cm². A length conversion factor of 100 becomes 100³ for volume and 100² for area.
